MSCCN
is a hard charging, ethical and quiet organization whose mission,
above all else,
comes first. We wanted to feature a CEO that conducts business in
the same manner.
The first CEO to grace our web site had to be a person who absolutely
and without fail,
personified dignity, grace, humility and humanity. We didn't have
to search long!
MSCCN Proudly Announces 1st Featured
CEO - Jim Greenwood, Concentra Inc.
Jim
Greenwood assumed the position of
Chief Executive Officer for Concentra in
June 2007. Prior to this he served as the
company’s Executive Vice President of
Corporate Development, where he was
responsible for acquisitions, joint ventures,
and new business initiatives. Since 1993,
when he joined a predecessor company
as Chief Financial Officer, Concentra has
completed over 100 acquisitions and
joint ventures.
In addition to serving on Concentra’s
Board of Directors, Mr. Greenwood is a
board member for Amerita, Inc., which
is a privately held specialty infusion
company.
Mr. Greenwood received his Bachelor
of Business Administration degree from
Baylor University and is a certified public
accountant.
“As
CEO of a national health care organization, I am proud to be leading
our
company’s efforts to improve the health of Americans,”
says Greenwood,
“but I am equally proud of our leadership role in providing
private-sector
support of our nation’s military.”
Concentra
is the Founding Corporation and Charter member of the MSCCN.
“We helped launch this worthy organization,” says Greenwood,
“and we will
continue to work with the military branches and their support resources.”
Concentra is also a selected corporate partner to the Army Spouse
Employment Program.
In 2005, Concentra was recognized in a VIP
signing ceremony by the
National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve
(ESGR),
a Department of Defense agency, as a “Five-Star Employer”
for its Military
Spouse Employment Program.
At the time, Concentra was among the one percent of 8,500 companies
to receive this five-star designation and only the third Texas company
to
receive this award.
Greenwood says
Concentra understands the hardship service members can
experience when they are deployed. To help bridge the financial
gap created
from being called to active duty, Concentra fulfills the requirements
of the
law and goes beyond that in several key ways.
For example, USERRA (Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment
Rights Act) specifies that the employee be offered COBRA, which
can be
expensive. Concentra allows the employee’s family to stay
on its medical,
dental, vision, and life plans and only pay the "active"
premium for the
coverage. The company waives the employee portion of the premium,
and
charges only the remainder for that tier of coverage. The law does
not
require the employer to pay the differential between the employee’s
company compensation and military compensation, but Concentra pays
the differential up to $50,000 per year.
Support such as this has made Concentra a “military-friendly”
place to work.
Mike Burton joined Concentra in part because he needed commitment
from
his employer to support his activities as a member of the Texas
Army
National Guard. “From day one, Concentra leadership was extremely
accommodating to my schedule,” says Mike, an Assistant Vice
President
with Concentra’s Health Solutions division. “They basically
said, ‘Let us
know how it goes and tell us if there’s anything we can do
to support you.’
The company’s subsidy of my pay during deployment was still
another
confirmation that I had made the right employment decision.”
Concentra also employs medical doctors, many of whom are in reserve
roles
and can be called to duty. Concentra’s Chief Medical Officer,
W. Tom Fogarty,
MD, says that Concentra’s medical operations are structured
to accommodate
call-ups of their doctors. “We employ more than 800 physicians
company wide,
so we know that at any given time there will be a percentage of
them on active
or reserve duty.
Concentra is pleased to be able to support their commitments as
well as the
ongoing operations of the armed forces.”
Deborah Kloeppel, President and CEO of MSCCN, says
that Concentra backs up
its statements of support with actions that are not necessarily
announced.
“Concentra has been a strong and enthusiastic supporter of
the work of MSCCN,
but they have a tendency to be quiet about it.”
Kloeppel cites several examples of actions Concentra has taken on
behalf of the
military spouse support program that have never been reported. “Concentra
paid
the fees of two law firms to ensure MSCCN had everything in order
so we could
run our operation and mission as an independent non-profit organization.
Concentra
also provided $1,000 to three of my MSCCN military spouse staff
members
(above and beyond their salaries) to help their evacuation process
from Belle Chase
Naval Air Station in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. Concentra
continued to
pay the salaries of the three MSCCN staff members during their traumatic
time of
multiple moves to safe havens when military installations were full
and could not
accommodate the military wives and kids."
"One example", continued Kloeppel, " is Tammy Steele
(SVP Human Resources),
who commissioned Concentra to send new computers to my Team when
our
clunkers finally shut down after Katrina. Tammy’s support
is unshakable regarding
the MSCCN mission. Finally, Concentra donated approximately $500,000
to MSCCN
to support military spouses, widows, caregivers and war wounded
into jobs –
whether the jobs were at Concentra or not.”
